As Scarecrow Group approaches its 40th year, we find ourselves feeling nostalgic, so we started digging through some digital relics to see how things used to look. We were a relatively early adopter of the internet – before the turn of the millennium – so there was plenty to look at, and we thought we would share some of the highlights with you.
1990s
The oldest version of our site captured by the Internet Archive dates all the way back to 1998, when the internet was a very different and much more basic place. Sites back then were designed to load quickly over a dial-up connection, give you the necessary information, and not much else.
2001
We all have things in the back of our wardrobe which, on reflection, we wouldn’t buy today. Similarly, we at Scarecrow are not sure we would ever revisit this yellow and red colour scheme we briefly used in the early 2000s.
2003
That one didn’t last long before we moved to the next iteration, which is still very early 2000s but much easier on the eye.
2006
The digital world was moving fast at the start of the millennium, and Scarecrow made sure to keep up. By 2006 we were already on our third website of the decade. This one used the greens which would be our familiar brand colours for another ten years or so.
2008
Towards the end of the 2000s, we implemented one more redesign. While this one doesn’t exactly look like it could be used today, it looks much less dated than the others as by this point the pace of change was slowing down. Give or take some tweaks to the colour scheme, this design remained in service until well into the 2010s, with this screenshot taken from a 2012 capture.
Today
That last version of the site lasted until the design we use today took over, and it continues to serve us well. Of course, one day it will be due for an update, and when that day comes we’ll be excited to see what the new face of our online presence looks like.
