Nesting is Not in Season: Urban Bird Control Is

Posted on

Right now, the UK and many other companies are outside of nesting season and many other countries, and that means a window of opportunity for urban bird control. Most new measures cannot be implemented while birds are nesting, so this time of year is your chance to get new systems in place.

The Problem of Nesting Season

Many countries have laws against disturbing wild birds while they are nesting. Here in the UK, for example, the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it illegal to damage the nest of any wild bird and to disturb a variety of protected species while they are nesting. This means new bird dispersal measures cannot be installed when birds may already be nesting within their effective range.

Nesting season in the UK is legally defined as running from the start of February to the end of August, so that blocks urban site operators from addressing bird problems for two thirds of the year. With studies showing some species are nesting up to a month earlier than they did in the 1960s, it is possible that this period could get even longer. It is therefore crucial to seize the few months between nesting seasons to put new systems in place and reduce issues with birds for the following year.

Bio-Acoustic Bird Control for Urban Sites

Bio-acoustic bird control works by broadcasting birds’ natural distress calls. These are the calls birds make when fearing for their life, alerting other birds to dangers and prompting them to leave the area. Using high-fidelity reproductions of these calls can make an area seem hostile to birds, preventing them from entering or from lingering for long.

If birds establish themselves in nests in or around a site, then the site is stuck with those birds for nesting season. However, if bio-acoustic systems have been installed before nesting season begins, they will believe the area is dangerous. Ideally, this should be combined with a full clean-up during the off-season, removing guano and making the area feel less like they are returning to a familiar home. These measures prevent birds from establishing themselves in the area and help to keep the site clear throughout the year.
