Continuing Bird Strikes
Monday 26 July 2010
We continue to receive reports – almost daily – of airplane bird strikes. Some of them are relatively minor but many cause costly damage to turbines and fuselages. Occasionally, a bird strike can penetrate the cockpit of an aircraft or cause an engine to shut down. This results in the pilot having to initiate an emergency landing.
The biggest risk to aircraft from bird strike is on take-off and landing – usually within the vicinity of the airport itself.
